Stamped Onesies…

Stamping

These are just the cutest things! A friend of mine is due to have a baby girl in a week, and I just had to make a bucket of hand-stamped onesies after I saw this blog entry. I didn’t use the same stamps, but my friend Mimi & I got together and between the two of us had all the supplies that we needed for a complete set. They are actually quite easy to make – but I think it took us at least two hours just to decide on a font & the color scheme. *LOL* We chose bright vivid colors & decorated the pail accordingly.

All shirts were made by first printing out our phrases onto T-shirt transfer paper. (Don’t forget to print in mirror-image or the words on your onesie will be backwards!) Next, we stamped the outline of each animal in black above their corresponding phrase and carefully colored in the animals using bright-colored markers. After the ink dried, we cut around each animal & phrase leaving just a small border, and then ironed the transfer onto the Onesie. Make sure you don’t use steam. After the transfer cooled, we peeled the backing paper off and we were done! :)

Here is what the final products looked like. We learned that you have to be careful how long you iron, because the transfer paper tends to yellow if it overheats (20-25 seconds is probably ideal).

Here are our designs up close (our favorite is the monkey one that says “Monkey See” on the front & “Monkey Do” on the bottom – the idea was compliments of Mimi’s husband, Sean):

Supply list:
Onesies (WalMart), T-shirt Transfer Paper (Avery), Clear Pail (Staples), Tag Punches (Marvy), “It’s a girl” embossing folder (Cuttlebug), Scallop circle template for lid (Colluzle template), Elephant Circle Stamp (Fiskars Baby Set), Marvy Le Plume II water-based markers (used for all stamping), Onesie Animal Stamp set (The Angel Company), “Black Boys on Mopeds” Font (downloaded from 1001freefonts.com – yeah, I know…weird name), Assorted ribbons from Mimi’s stash, Onesie acrylic stamp – from $1 bin at Michaels, & smiling daisy stamp (Stampin’ Up! – was an extra design we made that we didn’t put in the gift set).

Hmmm…Danish craft stores? No clue, sweetie. I’m guessing you can get the T-shirt transfer paper at an office supply store where you’d buy paper for your printer. We have massive crafts stores here in the States like Hobby Lobby, Michaels, & JoAnn. Where do you buy your knitting supplies for your great knitting projects…online? Or in a specialty craft store?

Not sure how expensive it is to ship overseas…but you can buy a lot of craft supplies from joann.com. :)

Let me get this straight… you stamped and colored onto the transfer paper?

Hi Rhonda – yes – I stamped and colored onto the paper before ironing onto the onesies…by doing that you lock the color in place when you iron it on…

The stamped onesies are so inspiring! When you color the stamped image on the transfer paper, do have to use any particular type of marker? Would you know if I could use Copics? Thanks!

Hi Sal – I haven’t tried them yet on the transfer paper myself…but Copics are permanent and work great on fabric. I imagine they’d do a great job on the transfer paper as well!
