Hands and Baubles

Hi everyone…it’s hard to believe it is that time of year again. I thought I’d share a little gift with you. Are there any Joni Mitchell lovers out there? I’ve always been a fan of her holiday song “River”. Click on the image above or here to take a listen.

Am just getting over the stomach flu this week, so this is a rough version… but I couldn’t wait to try out my new vocal microphone with the ol’ Clavinova piano. Hope you enjoy it!

There’s no hiding the fact that I’m a huge fan of Sara Bareilles’ songwriting. She has the knack for coming up with incredible ballads.

It’s been a while since I’ve sat down at the piano and shared a tune with you. The song I’m sharing today inspired me to give some new recording gear a try. It is called “Breathe Again” (from Sara’s album Kaleidoscope Heart), and can be downloaded here. Hope you like this rough take.

Happy Sunday,

Love is Christmas .mp3

I have to admit that for the last couple of weeks, I’ve been caught in the frenzy of last-minute Christmas shopping trying to find the “perfect” gifts for family and friends. It’s funny how we get stressed out over buying the right things, when the best presents are those that can never be put in a box, right?

Sara Bareilles wrote a song a few years back that is a beautiful expression of this sentiment. I sat down at the piano and recorded my own version for you as a small holiday gift.

Love is Christmas.mp3

Love is Christmas by Sara Bareilles
I don’t care if the house is packed, or the strings of light are broken.
I don’t care if the gifts are wrapped, or there’s nothing here to open.
Love is not a toy, and no paper will conceal it.
Love is simply joy that I’m home.

I don’t care if the carpet’s stained, we’ve got food upon the table.
I don’t care if it’s gonna rain. Our little room is warm & stable.
Love is who we are, and no season can contain it.
Love would never fall for that.

We sing…. oooooh….oooooh….oooooh….
Let love lead us. Love is Christmas.

Why so scared that you’ll mess it up, when perfection keeps you haunted.
All we need is your best, my love. That’s all anyone ever wanted.
Love is how we do…let no judgment overrule it.
Love I look to you, and I sing….

Ooooooh. Oooooh. Ahhh. Ahhhh. Ooooh.
Let love lead us. Love is Christmas.

May this holiday season surround you with those you hold dear and may it bring you friendship, joy, laughter and most of all …. may you feel love.

Merry Christmas,
Laura

Glory of Love mp3

So it’s been a while since I’ve sat down at the piano, pulled out my microphone, and recorded a tune. A couple of evenings ago, the urge overtook me after watching the 80’s movie
Beaches.

If you haven’t watched it, you’re missing out. I highly recommend the film, but make sure you have a box of tissues handy ’cause you’ll need them. It’s basically the story of two women (played by Bette Middler & Barbara Hershey) who meet as children and have a lifetime friendship with all its ups and downs.

One of the songs Bette Middler performs both at the beginning and end of the film is an old classic called “Glory of Love” (nope, not the Peter Cetera song… but the one written by Billy Hill that was a smash hit in 1936). I downloaded a jazzy arrangement to play on my piano & sang my interpretation. I hope you like it!

You can download a copy HERE.
