Hi everyone…it’s hard to believe it is that time of year again. I thought I’d share a little gift with you. Are there any Joni Mitchell lovers out there? I’ve always been a fan of her holiday song “River”. Click on the image above or here to take a listen.
Am just getting over the stomach flu this week, so this is a rough version… but I couldn’t wait to try out my new vocal microphone with the ol’ Clavinova piano. Hope you enjoy it!
There’s no hiding the fact that I’m a huge fan of Sara Bareilles’ songwriting. She has the knack for coming up with incredible ballads.
It’s been a while since I’ve sat down at the piano and shared a tune with you. The song I’m sharing today inspired me to give some new recording gear a try. It is called “Breathe Again” (from Sara’s album Kaleidoscope Heart), and can be downloaded here. Hope you like this rough take.
One of my favorite Copic techniques this year is creating glitter sticker sheets and bringing them to life with creative coloring. When I saw Elizabeth Crafts Designs’ gold holly tree stickers… I knew they’d look fabulous in greens and reds for the holidays.
I’ve added three levels of dimension to the rolling, snowy hills:
The sticker sheet also comes with stunning snowflake tree images. They make a great alternative holiday card in unconventional shades of lavender/blue:
Want to make your own? I’ll be teaching these cards at a class on December 6th in the DFW metroplex. Contact me for more info.
For years, I’ve heard of people keeping “art journals”, but had never tried to use one myself. After all – I have about 10 writing journals calling my name that have yet to see ink!
But around a year ago, I was inspired to take the leap. I picked up a hard-bound Strathmore with some solid mixed media paper (that can handle a lot of abuse). Slowly – I began to fill the pages with whimsical faces and inspirational quotes. When I started, their eyes were too close together, their lips in the wrong place, and how in the world do you draw nostrils? lol
But after making it through the first few spreads, I realized that there is something very satisfying about filling up 2 blank pages with whimsy using wonderful art supplies you’ve been hoarding in your stash for months. It’s a great place to experiment with new techniques, and you can generally complete a project in a night or two. 70 pages and many evenings later… I have a “finished” journal. I’ve decided to share the year-long journey with you!
You can click below to peruse the digital copy.
Thanks for sharing in my art adventures!
Note to tablet users – turn your iPad/tablet length-wise to view facing pages together.
I have to admit that for the last couple of weeks, I’ve been caught in the frenzy of last-minute Christmas shopping trying to find the “perfect” gifts for family and friends. It’s funny how we get stressed out over buying the right things, when the best presents are those that can never be put in a box, right?
Sara Bareilles wrote a song a few years back that is a beautiful expression of this sentiment. I sat down at the piano and recorded my own version for you as a small holiday gift.

Love is Christmas by Sara Bareilles
I don’t care if the house is packed, or the strings of light are broken.
I don’t care if the gifts are wrapped, or there’s nothing here to open.
Love is not a toy, and no paper will conceal it.
Love is simply joy that I’m home.
I don’t care if the carpet’s stained, we’ve got food upon the table.
I don’t care if it’s gonna rain. Our little room is warm & stable.
Love is who we are, and no season can contain it.
Love would never fall for that.
We sing…. oooooh….oooooh….oooooh….
Let love lead us. Love is Christmas.
Why so scared that you’ll mess it up, when perfection keeps you haunted.
All we need is your best, my love. That’s all anyone ever wanted.
Love is how we do…let no judgment overrule it.
Love I look to you, and I sing….
Ooooooh. Oooooh. Ahhh. Ahhhh. Ooooh.
Let love lead us. Love is Christmas.
May this holiday season surround you with those you hold dear and may it bring you friendship, joy, laughter and most of all …. may you feel love.
